I am having recurring problems sending e-mails, not knowing when it is going to work or not. The following message is one that I usually get:

"Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: <info@axxxxx.co.uk> recipient rejected - relay denied.

Please check the message recipient "info@xxxxx.co.uk" and try again."

I also get the following message when trying to send:

"Login to server mail.madasafish.com with username btom@madasafish.com failed."

These are my current settings:

Details of selected server: Description: btom Server Name: mail.madasafish.com Port: 25 User Name: btom@madasafish.com Authentication method: Password, transmitted insecurely Connection Security: None

I haven't changed any settings from the last time I was able to send e-mails, so I would appreciate any help.

Also I get this message:

"Login to server mail.madasafish.com with username btom@madasafish.com failed.Sending of the message failed. Unable to authenticate to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.madasafish.com. Please check the password and verify the 'Authentication method' in 'Account Settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)'."

I don't know what to do about this, as it refuses the password I used to use.

On your first issue, that type of 'relay' error message sometimes happens when the email id of the sender doesn't match the email id of the SMTP server settings. Something to check.

On your second problem, you might try changing to port 587 or 465 and either STARTTLS or SSL/TLS . Ultimately, since the error message is coming from your email provider, it may be useful to contact them for proper email settings.

Hi David,

Thank you for your quick reply. Whilst I am not completely illiterate, I am not literate enough on this level! If I were to go onto Plusnet, I would be able to send an e-mail, but it takes a while to do so. By their own confession, Plusnet (who bought over Madasafish) don't offer support technically for madasafish mails, although they have helped me as much as they could. They have been talking for some time to pull Plusnet mail, when I will not be able to use Madasafish through them again.

So if you are willing to help someone who is totally ignorant of these things (so probably completely illeterate!), I would be very grateful if you could explain your answers as simply for a question such as I.

In regards to the first issue, could you explain where I can check for the email id of the sender and SMTP server settings are? I'm guessing that they are in the settings on Thunderbird, where I find:

The first identity is used by default - Byron Thomas<btom@madasafish.com>

SMTP Type - IMAP Mail Server Server Name - mail.madasafish.com (Port 143) Security Settings: Connection Security - None is selected Authentication Method - Password, transmitted insecurely is selected

Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings Server Name - mail.madasafish.com (Port 25) Security Settings: Connection Security - None is selected Authentication Method - Password, transmitted insecurely is selected

Looking at these they are not the same, so if I am looking at the same as what you've mentioned, what do I have to do?

Also, what is the significance of the other two options, "either STARTTLS or SSL/TLS"? Would selecting these cause anything untoward to happen?

For the second issue, the ports are set at 143 and 25, so since I have not changed anything, would changing it to the different port numbers do any harm? (Now you can see my level of knowledge!)

I'm also guessing that when you say, "Ultimately, since the error message is coming from your email provider, it may be useful to contact them for proper email settings" you may be referring now to PlusNet? If so, I will try and get the information from them.

I would have thought that since I have made no alterations to the system for some time, that I still would be able to send e-mails? The only change that has been made is when my son added a local folder to my account so that I could save space, since PlusNet was failing to work (and so Thunderbird) as they have quite a small limit for holding e-mails. If I go into the settings for this folder, I can see the following: "The following is a special account. There are no identities associated with it." But since he added this local folder, I was able to still send messages.

I also don't have a facility to send emails from the new Thunderbird app on my phone, with the ommission of a "New Message" icon alongside the inbox, sent, deleted etc.

if you are able to help further, I would be most grateful.

The incoming server info is at account setting pane and then the server settings pane. Do a screenshot of that The SMTP server is also on the account settings pane. Highlight the account name on left and the bottom line on pane on right has link to outgoing SMTP server. Press the edit button there and do screenshot of that. Post both and we'll go from there

Thanks again David.

I thought I had copied all the information from the screenshots you've asked for in my last post, so I apologise if I hadn't sent all you needed. Anyway, I have attached the screenshots and hope that they are the right ones. Well at least I tried to send the attacments! I'm getting this message even though I've saved as other formats; "Error uploading image ✖ Invalid or no image received." I am using Libre office but have tried to save as Word, export as JPEG etc, but getting the same message each time. Any ideas, please?

Hi David,

I managed to get through to Plusnet today but couldn't really help me with the settings. However, by now I was not even to login and to receive e-mails! The gentleman then tried to help me with their passwords, as there is a primary one followed by another. After a few failed attempts, he gave me a new password, which initially failed, but after I think the third attempt, wierdly worked!

It worked after I put the phone down, but later this afternoon it failed to login again. I've spoken to another agent, and she couldn't get a grasp of the 2 passwords, but then after a few attempts, it both receives and sends again - I'll hold my breathe!

So I am not sure if I still need to alter any of the settings, as it could be a problem on the side of Plusnet, although their webmail has continued to work, albeit taking ages buffering for a long time if anything like opening a folder is involved.

If you still think that the settings would make it more stable, then I will try and find a way again of sending the screenshots to you, although the previous post gives you the settings as they are now.

Thanks for all your help.

Kind regards,

Byron.

Your screenshots didn't come through. And what may be the major issue is that your error message indicated relay. That usually means the real issue is that sending email id does not match SMTP server email id. Check that

Thanks David, Do you mean the difference between these 2 that I posted to you earlier?:

SMTP Type - IMAP Mail Server Server Name - mail.madasafish.com (Port 143) Security Settings: Connection Security - None is selected Authentication Method - Password, transmitted insecurely is selected

Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings Server Name - mail.madasafish.com (Port 25) Security Settings: Connection Security - None is selected Authentication Method - Password, transmitted insecurely is selected

With a tweak from Plusnet having changed my passwords for me (again), all seems to be fine. However, I can't see a facility to send e-mail from my Thunderbird, or is this not an option?

I am not sure what you mean by having no facility to send mail. If the 'new message' button does not appear click view>folders>folder pane header. The word 'relay' usually indicates that the email id on the email being sent does not match the email id of what is on the smtp server. Are they the same? Does the SMTP server have the full email address?

Thanks David, but on my phone, there isn't a "send" button on my Thunderbird app. Up until this morning, my Thunderbird emails have been working perfectly, but as soon as I checked the box to save my password, it prevented me to send e-mails again! I can still receive e-mails on Thunderbird, and Plusnet have changed the password again, but this time it has not worked. They checked by asking me to send an email on their Plusnet webmail, and it worked, so advised that I contact Thunderbird to check my settings.

I have changed my port settings and SSL/STARTTLS, etc, but nothing has worked. I don't know why, but I cannot upload my images here, so this is what's happening:

1. After selecting Thunderbird, pop-up window shows:

Password Required – Mozilla Thunderbird

Please enter your Primary Password.

Box to enter password, with options to Sign in or Cancel

2. The following message appears:

Enter your password for btom@madasafish.com

Enter your password for btom@madasafish.com on mail.madasafish.com:

enter password box

tick box for: Use Password Manager to remember this password. Ok or cancel

3. The inbox opens, but a window appears the same time:

Login to account btom@madasafish.com failed

Login to server mail.madasafish.com with username btom@madasafish.com failed.

Retry Enter New Password Cancel

Retry gives the same message:

Login to account “btom@madasafish.com” failed.

Retry Enter New Password Cancel

4. When none of the options work, a message then appears in a new window:

Sending of the message failed.

Unable to authenticate to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.madasafish.com. Please check the password and verify the 'Authentication method' in 'Account Settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)'.

SMTP SETTINGS

Description: btom Server Name: mail.madasafish.com Port: 465 (default: 587 which I’ve also tried) Connection Security: None Authentication Method: Password, transmitted insecurely User Name: btom@madasafish.com

IMAP SETTINGS

As above, except Port: 143

Thanks again,

Byron.
