Screen Turns Unresponsive and Gray When Opening New Tab

Multiple times a day when switching tabs the entire screen will turn gray and become entirely unresponsive, requiring me to close and restart the app. This has been happening for weeks. It does this regardless of the number of tabs I have open, and continues to do this even after clearing the cache. There is also no report for it in about:crashes.

When the app is going to turn fully grey when opening a new tab when I scroll down and the address bar moves away there is a gray box where it used to be. Also, when opening a new tab the homepage won't appear; there is no "jump back in" or "recently visited" section, just a fully gray background.

I've had it happen a dozen more times in the past few days and I've been able to narrow down that it happens when the grey box has appeared and the address bar has the text cursor in it. Once I exit the textbox in any way, backing out or pressing enter to go to a new URL, the whole screen turns grey. It is actually possible to switch between tabs I already have open.

I only use uBlock Origin. I tried disabling it to see if that would help but the problem persists, so it happens even without any extensions.
